Maine CDC's Drinking Water Program Water routinely tests water from public water supplies, collects data, and enforces a variety of rules to ensure safety. From compliance testing data, MaineTracking creates and provides state and system-level summaries about the mean and maximum levels found for a select group of contaminants. MaineTracking also provides displays of data from special testing programs, such as lead in school water and PFAS in community water systems, schools, and daycares.

What data are available?

MaineTracking tracks the following contaminants associated with public water.

  • Special testing programs:
    • PFAS (per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances), aka "forever chemicals"
    • Lead in school water
  • Selected contaminants:
    • Arsenic
    • Disinfection byproducts: total trihalomethanes, haloacetic acids
    • Nitrates
    • Other, less common: radium, uranium, perchloroethylene (PCE), tetrachloroethylene (TCE), di(2-ethylhexyl) phthalate (DEHP), atrazine

Types of Public Water Systems

There are three categories of regulated water systems: community, non-transient non-community, and transient non-community. Data are available here for community and non-transient non-community systems. The different categories determine water testing and compliance requirements. Use the map to explore locations of systems and populations served.
