An August report in Scientific American uses Maine Tracking Network data to explore the issue of naturally occurring fluoride present in some private well water in Maine.
The article examines the complicated public health issue – too little fluoride is not protective against dental cavities, but too much may cause health problems such as dental fluorosis (pitted and stained teeth) – and the established and emerging science related to fluoride in unregulated drinking water.
The article spawned several local news stories about private well water quality in Maine and the need for Maine residents to test their private well water for fluoride and several other naturally occurring chemicals such as arsenic, radon, and uranium.
